4 Items That Should Never go to Landfill
Rubbish is accumulated every single day and while most businesses and individuals do their best to recycle, it’s inevitable that some items will end up at the landfill. Unfortunately, when this happens, the results can be extremely dangerous when not handled correctly.
So which items should be kept away from landfill sites? Here’s all you need to know.
Plastic
Plastic is the environment’s number 1 enemy. Although it is easy to recycle, not all plastics can be reused and they will end up in landfills untouched. The construction of this material means it can take centuries to decay and throughout this time, chemicals can be leaked into the groundwater below and the atmosphere.
Aggregates
Construction rubble such as bricks, stone and other similar materials can very easily be recycled so there is no excuse for it to end up in landfills. Aggregates that are leftover from projects or the results of reclamation sites can be reused as they are still great quality and this will prevent the raw materials from being over used.
Batteries
We’ve all seen leaking batteries before, so imagine what that could do to our environment. Most supermarkets and even high street stores offer battery recycling services so you can avoid throwing them in the bed and sending them to landfill. In this situation, the battery will contaminate the surrounding environment as it dissolves.
Electronics
Don’t be sneaky and try to put your electronics in your black bin. If you have electronic items to get rid of, donate them or bring them to a specialised sort-it location. Electronics should be in a separate recycling stream because they contain highly specialized materials and elements.
