Common Types Of Stone Used In Construction

William Thompson & Son • 21 April 2022

There’s a long list of stones used across construction, fulfilling a number of unique purposes and functions depending on their properties, strength and durability. Basalt, marble, limestone, granite and slate among others are all commonly used in construction, all obtained via the quarrying of solid rock. Here, we take a closer look at just some of the key types of stone used in construction.

Basalt

A common form of stone used in road construction, basalt stone can also be used as an aggregate in concrete production, as well as masonry works for bridge piers, river walls and dams. With a medium to fine-grained and compact stone structure, basalt has a strong resistance to weathering, is impervious to moisture and is extremely tough and durable.

Granite

Similarly used as a key component in bridge piers, damns, curbs and columns, granite has several important applications. Vital in constructing ballasts for railways or damp-proofing for the external cladding of walls, granite has a low absorption value, low porosity and good resistance to frost and weathering.

Slate

Composed from quartz, mica and clay materials, slate is commonly used as a material for roofing tiles, slabs and pavements, and is typically found in layers. Due to being easily mined and cut into these natural layers, slate is particularly effective for constructions or applications that require thin layers of rock. Applications generally include chalkboards, pavements and gravestones.

Sandstone

Unsuitable for use as a building stone due to its sediment composition, sandstone is typically used in conjunction with silica cement to provide the base material for the construction of heavy structures. Composed of quartz and feldspar, sandstone is also employed in masonry works, damns, bridge piers and river walls.

Limestone

Commonly used to make crushed stone, limestone is one of the most versatile types of stone in the construction industry, used across a high number of different applications. Easily crushed, limestone can be readily used as the primary rock in concrete mixes for road construction, as well as railroads.

Laterite

Laterite requires surface plastering to eliminate the pores before it can be used in construction, but once this has been achieved, it can be easily and effectively used as a building stone. Containing a high percentage of iron oxide, laterite can be easily quarried and later cut into blocks.

Marble

Commonly used for decorative purposes, marble is a metamorphic rock that can be polished and used as columns, flooring or steps for large, monumental buildings. Easily carved into different shapes and sizes, marble stone is strong, uniform in texture, well polished and low in porosity.
