Different Uses For Aggregates

William Thompson & Son • 18 August 2021

Aggregates can be used for so many different projects, the list well and truly goes on! You might not realise it, but they play a massive role in so many construction projects. The most common use of them is to add a level of strength to concrete, it does this by strengthening its structure and thus minimising instances of cracks.

With this in mind, we will outline to you some of the different uses for aggregates! Read on to discover more.

The Use of Aggregates

Aggregates are a crucial component in making concrete and offer you so many benefits. It’s very much the case that the smaller the size of the aggregate, the greater generally the cost of bringing in the binding material. Using substantial amounts of aggregate is not advised either because it will weaken the material.

A great compromise is to fuse together a mixture of fine and coarse aggregates to lower the issue above. It has also been indicated that aggregates make a very valuable product that can reach a good price in the market.

Types of Aggregates

Aggregates are taken from pits, quarries, and even gravels from the sea and river banks in lots of countries. There are plenty of types of aggregates, with the four most common ones being described in this next section:

Gravel aggregates

This type of aggregate is made from crushing natural stone and sifting quarried rock. They don't have a great deal of strength in comparison to granite aggregates but are much cheaper for you to purchase.

Sand Aggregates

Sand is regarded as the finest aggregate. It has different gradations that include kiln-dried silver sand, builder’s sand, as well as sharp sand. The finest of these is kiln-dried silver sand.

Granite Aggregates

It is the opinion of experts that these granites are one of the best aggregates to produce high-quality concrete. This is because granite aggregates come in a range of shapes, sizes, and even colours, including red, grey, and pink.

Limestone Aggregates

These aggregates are made by crushing sedimentary rocks, they are most commonly used in reinforced concrete and road construction, apart from gravel and granite. Limestone aggregates appear more jagged and bulkier in comparison to the relatively smoother gravel.
