Important Advantages Of Asphalt Driveways

William Thompson & Son • 21 April 2022

Residential driveways are generally installed in one of three ways, through the primary use of either asphalt, concrete or gravel. As a general rule, asphalt has the edge over its competitors, producing clean, smooth finishes at a fair price. In this article, we highlight just some of the key advantages of using asphalt for your new driveway.

Durable

In time, concrete will become prone to cracks, splintering and flakiness, resulting in dust and debris floating above your driveway almost permanently. In contrast, asphalt is a much more durable solution, easily laid out, smooth and borderline impenetrable.

Flexible

As suggested, asphalt is extremely durable, capable of bearing extremely heavy loads compared with concrete solutions. A highly flexible material, asphalt can handle heavy loads and difficult conditions, helping to prevent cracks and maintain the style and functionality of your driveway for much longer. Able to provide a flexibility that allows for the material to give way when required, asphalt is considerably less prone to cracks and splintering than concrete alternatives.

Affordable

Significantly more affordable than concrete, asphalt is a cost-effective solution for paving your new driveway, resulting in a smooth, even finish that won’t break the bank. As an estimated guide, tarmac or asphalt will cost around £60 per metre squared, which, despite being more than gravel, (£30 per m2), is significantly less than a concrete paving slab, which will typically cost upwards of £200 per metre squared.

Stylish

Easily the most important advantage from a vanity perspective, asphalt driveway installations are smooth, clean and seamless, resulting in an outcome that is both practical and immensely stylish. Compared with concrete or gravel alternatives, an asphalt driveway is inviting, acting as the perfect exterior for your home.

Low Maintenance

Durable and flexible in equal measure, asphalt driveways rarely ever need any maintenance work. Strong enough to withstand heavy loads and extreme weather conditions, asphalt driveways shouldn't require any serious maintenance for at least twelve years, but with the appropriate care and attention, could easily last nearly triple that.

Weatherproof

As suggested, extreme weather conditions can wreak havoc on your driveway, particularly if constructed from concrete. Concrete is prone to cracks and deterioration, suffering intensely from the major shifts in temperatures and conditions largely seen across the UK. In contrast, asphalt is able to withstand shifts in weather and extreme conditions, as, due to its excellent insulation properties, it’s capable of absorbing heat in the height of summer and melting snow much faster in the winter.
