The Cost of Ready Mix Concrete: What Affects Pricing?

9 June 2026

If you've ever requested a quote for ready mixed concrete and wondered why the price differs from one project to the next, you're not alone. The cost of ready mix concrete isn't fixed; it varies depending on several factors that are specific to your job. Understanding what drives those costs can help you plan more accurately, avoid surprises, and make sure you're getting the best value for your money.

Here, we break down the key factors that influence ready mix concrete prices in the UK, and explain how we work to keep our concrete delivered costs competitive without cutting corners on quality.

Volume: How Much Concrete Do You Need?

One of the biggest influences on your overall cost is the volume of concrete you order, typically priced per cubic metre (m³). Generally speaking, the more you order, the lower the unit cost - because the fixed overheads of batching, loading, and delivering are spread across a larger quantity.

For smaller jobs, the minimum load charge can make concrete delivered seem expensive relative to the amount you receive. That's why it's worth taking the time to calculate your requirements accurately before placing an order. To work out the volume you need, simply multiply the length, width, and depth of the area you're filling (in metres). For example, a slab that is 5m x 4m x 0.1m would require 2m³ of concrete.

If you're unsure of your quantities, get in touch with our team, and we'll be happy to help you work it out before you commit to an order.

Mix Type and Specification

Not all concrete is the same, and the mix you require will have a direct bearing on price. Ready mix concrete comes in a range of grades and specifications, each designed for different applications. A standard domestic grade mix used for footings or garden paths will typically cost less than a high-strength structural mix required for commercial foundations or reinforced slabs.

Additional admixtures, such as accelerators to speed up setting time, retarders to slow it down in warm weather, or fibres to improve crack resistance, can also add to the cost. Always specify the correct grade for your project from the outset, as using an inappropriate mix can lead to structural problems further down the line.

We hold BSI Ready Mixed Concrete Kitemark certification, which means the concrete we supply is independently verified to meet the required standards, giving you confidence in what you're getting.

Delivery Distance

The further the concrete has to travel from the batching plant to your site, the higher the delivery cost is likely to be. This is a simple matter of fuel, driver time, and vehicle wear, all of which are factored into the price of concrete delivered to your location.

Ready mix concrete also has a limited workable lifespan once it has been batched. Most mixes need to be placed and compacted within 90 minutes of loading, which means delivery distance isn't just a cost issue, it's a practical one too. Suppliers too far from your site may struggle to deliver within the required window, particularly in areas with heavy traffic.

Being based in Dumbarton, we're ideally positioned to supply concrete across Glasgow, Lanarkshire, and the surrounding regions, keeping delivery times and associated costs as efficient as possible.

Site Access and Conditions

The accessibility of your site plays a larger role in pricing than many customers expect. If our vehicles can pull up directly next to the pour area and discharge quickly, the process is straightforward. However, if your site is narrow, elevated, down a rural track, or requires a longer chute extension, additional time and equipment may be needed - and that can affect your final quote.

When you contact us for a quote, it helps to give us as much information as possible about your site conditions, including approximate distance from the road to the pour area, any low bridges or weight restrictions on access routes, and whether there are any other likely delays on site. The more we know in advance, the more accurate your quote will be.

Fuel Surcharges

It's worth noting that fuel surcharges can apply to both aggregate and ready mix concrete deliveries. These are reviewed regularly to reflect changes in fuel costs, and they are disclosed upfront so there are no hidden surprises when your invoice arrives. We believe in being transparent with our pricing, and our team will always make you aware of any applicable surcharges when you request a quote.

How We Keep Costs Competitive

At William Thompson & Son, we've invested heavily in our fleet and equipment to ensure our operations are as efficient as possible. Our modern haulage fleet, combined with our use of cutting-edge plant including the Cat 972M XE wheel loader and Cat 336EL hybrid excavator, means we can operate with lower fuel consumption and reduced downtime. That efficiency feeds directly into competitive pricing for our customers.

Our Dumbarton location also works in your favour. Situated just off the A82 at Milton Roundabout, we're well-connected to the motorway network, making deliveries to Glasgow and across Lanarkshire faster and more cost-effectively than suppliers based further afield.

We hold ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 accreditations, meaning our quality management and environmental processes are independently audited. This commitment to best practice helps us run a tight, well-organised operation, which ultimately benefits you as a customer.
