5 Ways to Use Sand in Your Garden

William Thompson & Son • 19 July 2022

Sand is a very useful material for any type of building, but it is also helpful to have in your garden. Whether white, brown, or black, the sand can be a welcome addition to any garden design and allows you to create even more variety in your landscaping.

Here are a few of the many ways to use sand in your landscaping.

1. Brick Paths

Want to lay a path without using mortar? You can lay sand in a shallow trench and tap the bricks into it, then sweep fresh sand over the brick path. This allows you to fill in the cracks. This is a surprisingly popular method of laying paths and can be used with bricks, stone blocks, or even flagstones. You just need to be sure the sand is level before you begin.

2. Sand Play Areas

Sand is a wonderful medium for children to play in, so you can build a sandbox or create a sand and water table for your children. They’ll enjoy digging and piling the sand up with their toys. However, ensure that you create a cover for the sand area as neighbourhood cats may tend to use it as a litter box.

3. Cactus Garden

If you live in an area where cacti will grow, you can make it look even more like a desert by adding sand. Plant your cacti and succulents throughout the garden bed and then top it with a layer of sand for aesthetic purposes.

4. Improved Soil

Are you plagued with clay soil? If so, this can be very difficult to plant in and it tends to become a slippery mess in the rain. However, if you’re willing to put in the work, you can ensure the soil contains 50% sand to make it lighter and easier for plants to grow in. Spread the sand over the soil you intend to plant in and then mix well with a machine or even by hand with a shovel.

5. Sand Paths

Another option is to lay your own sand paths. You can dig a couple of inches down and add gravel, then top the path off with sand to create the ideal place to walk with bare feet. Be sure to add edging though, because the sand will rapidly spread into the lawn and disappear otherwise.

Sand can be the perfect material to use in your landscaping process. It’s quite affordable and is easy to use for your garden. If you’re looking for a good source of quality sand, contact Thompson Quarries.
