Common Questions About Ready Mixed Concrete

William Thompson & Son • 16 November 2022

Ready mixed concrete is a fantastic aggregate for a number of building projects, construction tasks and everyday applications, but many questions persist about this versatile material. From the notable differences between ready mixed varieties and traditional concrete, to queries on delivery and application, using this concrete variant for the first time can be confusing. Not to worry though, as WM Thompson & Son Ltd are here to help out - so continue reading for answers to some of the most common questions about ready mixed aggregate from concrete suppliers.

How Does Ready Mixed Vary From Traditional Concrete?

The clue is in the name when it comes to spotting the difference between ready mixed and traditional concrete solutions. Generally speaking, the construction industry predominantly uses two main types, ready mixed and site mixed solutions. Selecting the right type for a construction project is immensely important, as both types have their own specific advantages and disadvantages.

The ready mixed type is manufactured and delivered to the construction site in an unhardened and plastic state - ready for use. Often this will be more convenient than site-mixed concrete components, which are prepared in specific ratios to obtain a desired strength.

Are There Any Safety Tips For Using Ready Mixed Concrete?

Touching or otherwise inhaling concrete can result in serious conditions and health concerns, including dry skin, visible burns and even trouble breathing. For these reasons, always consider Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for when navigating a site in which concrete is being mixed. Thick goggles and site masks with fitted filters should act as protection, while heavy tubs of concrete and other equipment should be carried in a manner so as not to injure your back or knees.

Does Ready Mixed Take Long To Set?

Depending on the scale of the construction project and volume of concrete which has been laid, the answer to this prominent question will likely vary. Contrary to regular belief, concrete doesn’t reach full as soon as it hardens, as it needs time to properly cure. This means that although a concrete surface may seem to be fully formed within 24 to 48 hours, you may need to wait up to 28 days - or risk damaging the ready mixed concrete.
