Ways to Reduce Landfill Waste

William Thompson & Son • 21 December 2021

A lot of the rubbish that we throw out will one day come to rest in a landfill. This pile of garbage can potentially not decompose for hundreds of years and cause irreparable harm to the environment. Harmful greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere and pollutants can seep into the earth and damage it.

But there are plenty of simple and easy ways to reduce landfill waste, so read on for a few ideas.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

The most common methods to stop waste from ending up in landfills is to reduce the amount of waste you produce, reuse as much as possible and recycle any waste that you can. Here are some ideas to reduce, reuse and recycle:

Food Waste

Instead of tossing away your food waste, try to reuse it as best you can. Most food can be converted into fertiliser you can use in your garden, or donate unused tins to charity. A great way to reduce food waste is planning your meals ahead, this prevents spur of the moment buying of random food that you end up not being able to eat and throwing out instead.

Water Bottle And Lunch Box

Instead of buying a new bottle of water and a meal deal every day, use a water bottle and lunch box. You’ll cut down on so much waste by utilising reusable containers instead.

Rechargeable Batteries

When batteries are taken to landfills, they begin to leak chemicals into the ground, leading to pollution. To solve this, use rechargeable batteries to prevent throwing them out whenever they run out of juice.

Donate or Sell Clothes

Throwing clothes away is one of the biggest contributions to charity, so instead of getting rid of them, try to donate them or sell them on again. Also when buying clothes try to shop in charity or vintage shops as much as possible, as the impact of clothing production on the environment is immense.

Reusable Or Tote Bag

Instead of using plastic bags every time you shop, invest in reusable bags or a tote bag. These are normally made using sustainable materials and practices, and reduce the amount of plastic that ends up in landfills each year.

Buy In Bulk

If you buy items in bulk, you’re using up less packaging and ultimately generating less waste. This can include food, household items, clothes and more.
