In 2023, getting to know the companies that you go into business with is vital. Everybody wants that personal touch and to know that the company they are going to work with has their best interests in mind and can offer them the precise services they need.

That is why, here at WM Thompson & Sons, we thought that we’d put together this ultimate guide to our company, including a little more about us and a run-through of all the services that we have on offer.

So read on to discover the 2023 guide to WM Thompson & Sons.

About WM Thompson & Sons

WM Thompson & Sons have provided our customers with services for nearly 100 years now. Our business started in 1946, operating as a horse and cart coal delivery business. Our services provided a precious service to customers on the banks of the river Clyde. We’ve always believed in being a family business and are now a fourth-generation business still helping businesses along the same river.

However, we aren’t just delivering coal anymore and we’ve expanded a bit further away from the river. We now offer a great range of services, which we’ll go into more detail about further in this article, and can offer our services to all of Glasgow and the surrounding areas, including Stirling, Dumbarton, Strathclyde and more.

As a business with a rich history in the area, we are incredibly proud of our ability to give back to the local community of Dumbartonshire. This includes creating a number of jobs by being a major employer in Glasgow as well as supporting the local economy and contributing to the community whenever possible

What Services We Offer

Quarry Services

While we may have started out simply delivering coal to our customers, we now have expanded to offer a range of different materials. These materials come from our quarry in the heart of Dumbarton, which we have been running for more than 75 years. Starting small, we have gone from strength to strength to position ourselves as a leading supplier for the region.

This includes a large selection of natural stone products, perfect for a wide range of projects of all sizes. This can include small projects like driveways and paths to larger construction needs such as infrastructure, flood defences and more.

From our quarry, you can expect high-quality gabion stone excavated on-site, which is then available in the size and quantity of your choosing. As well as large amounts of stone, we also offer gravel and fine sands.

Waste Removal & Sustainable Landfill

Next up we have our sustainable landfill site. We’ll discuss our sustainability responsibilities further on, but for now, we’ll just say we’re trying to battle the common misconception that all waste disposed of will end up in a landfill and stay there forever. While that may be true for non-sustainable landfills, we strive to make our services as eco-friendly as possible.

We offer waste removal services to our customers in West Scotland, and once we have this waste we focus on separating out any recyclable materials so we can dispose of them properly. Any non-recyclable waste is then taken to be disposed of correctly to try and have as little impact on the environment as possible.

Our landfill is S.E.P.A. licensed. This ensures we remain dedicated to maintaining a positive impact on the environment. This includes locally in Dumbarton where the site is situated, as well as the environment as a whole. Our landfill site is conveniently located close to our quarry, reducing the need for transporting materials over a great distance and reducing the environmental impact of vehicle movement.

Concrete Suppliers

The next service we have on offer is our concrete supply. We have a fleet of concrete trucks on hand, able to provide trade customers with high-quality, environmentally-friendly concrete. We do this through our sister company, Thompson Concrete Products Ltd. They own and operate their own static batching plant, which allows us to take on large projects as well as smaller ones.

Our concrete trucks allow us to efficiently provide anything from 1 to 10 cubic metres of wet concrete and screed with our team on hand to help you know the right quantity. As well as this, we can supply self-compacting concrete, ready-mix concrete, crushed concrete and a range of other concrete products. Ready-mix concrete is best used for projects where only a set amount of concrete is required

Not sure how much concrete you would need for your project? Well, we have a concrete calculator on hand to help you figure it out.

Recycled Aggregates In Glasgow

Aggregates are typically a very broad term. It can refer to a wide range of materials normally used in construction. It can include both coarse and medium-grained particulate material such as sand, crushed stone, gravel and recycled concrete.

As we are a business focused on sustainability, we specialise in the supply of recycled aggregates. They are an environmentally friendly way of completing projects and mean additional materials do not require quarrying.

We are able to offer our customers crushed concrete, hardcore, aggregate gravel, reclaimed stone and asphalt products. Quality control is very important to us, so you will always receive recycled aggregates of the highest quality for your projects.

Sustainable Practices

We are dedicated to keeping sustainability at the forefront of everything we do. We acknowledge how the business we are in can potentially have a large negative impact on the environment. Landfills can produce harmful greenhouse gases while mining for quarry products can pillage the earth’s natural resources.

Our goal is to work with the environment, not against it. This is why we do whatever is possible to neutralise any negative impact on the environment that can occur. This can range from supplying recycled aggregates to utilising our on-site recycling plant to ensure nothing goes to waste.

We work closely with S.E.P.A, Historic Scotland, Environmental Health and West Dunbartonshire Council to ensure we are following all the correct environmental procedures. What we cannot recycle we will dispose of in an as environmentally-friendly way as possible at our landfill site.

Looking for some credentials to back up our claims? Well, our commitment to sustainability allowed us to win at the MRW National Recycling Awards in 2019.

Our Quality Control Responsibility

We’ve already mentioned how we quality control everything that we provide to our customers, but we thought we’d go into a bit more detail about it. While some businesses take quality control seriously to an extent, we operate a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to our products. This helps us provide only the best products to our customers, keeping their trust in us intact and ensuring they return to us for further business.

This rigorous quality control involves checking our products for criteria such as size, weight and shape as well as more technical checks for the quality of treatments, coatings and finishes. This is on all products we have available, from our quarry products and concrete to recycled aggregates. Our recycled aggregates are also all verified in accordance with the Environment Agency end-of-waste requirements, so you can rest easy knowing their status as recycled aggregates is guaranteed.

It is not just our quality checks that all of our products meet. We ensure that they meet both our criteria as well as compliance with all legal legislation.
