Key Stages Of The Aggregate Transportation Process

10 September 2024

Aggregates are an essential raw material used throughout the construction process, where they can be extracted from quarries or recycled from building waste. They are usually sorted and bagged up by type, before being transported to the various locations where they are needed.

Aggregates such as gravel, building sand and crushed stone are essential for a variety of projects, including the creation of concrete and for various landscaping applications. As such, these materials need to be taken from the quarry to the site where they will be used, where this process must be completed in an orderly manner to ensure that resources arrive on time.

Read on to find out more about the aggregate transportation process, with a look at how these materials are handled to ensure that every project has the materials it needs.

Quality Control

Before aggregates begin their journey to a specific project site, they must undergo a range of tests to ensure that they meet strict industry standards. This is especially important for recycled aggregates, where distributors must be able to show that their repurposed materials are pure enough for reuse.

Order Confirmation & Loading

Lots of aggregate suppliers will offer an online ordering service to allow construction teams to get hold of the resources that they need. These requests will be processed by experienced handlers to ensure that everything is organised correctly, where these sacks of material will then be loaded into a transportation vehicle.

In-Transit

It is important that aggregates are kept safe and secure on route to the project site. As such they may be sealed within special bags and strapped into the loading bed of a truck. Alternatively, some tipper vehicles will transport aggregates loose, where this makes unloading easier upon arrival.

Site Delivery

Once the transportation vehicle arrives on site, the top priority will be to unload the aggregates safely. Usually, there will be a designated area prepared to receive these materials, where site workers will be on hand to monitor the off loading process. At this stage the customer will check that their order has been completed in full, and that the aggregates are of a suitable quality.
