Sustainable Landscaping: Eco-Friendly Ideas for Your Garden

WM Thompson & Sons • 17 August 2023

Everyone fancies giving their garden a refresh from time to time, whether it’s keeping up with the latest trends or making your garden more manageable to maintain. However, landscaping can often be expensive and wasteful, especially when it comes to buying brand new materials.

Thankfully, there are ways that this can be done sustainably by using eco-friendly products. Read on below as we list some ways you can do this.

Stepping Stones

Stepping stones are great for creating a whimsical walkway through your garden, whilst also being a practical feature in that they offer a solid surface to walk on without getting your shoes dirty, no matter the weather.

Rather than investing in slate slabs or raw stone, a more eco-friendly option would be to use sustainable or recycled concrete. These look just as effective, whilst repurposing concrete that would otherwise go to waste.

Gravel

If you like the idea of having a full or even partial gravel garden, which is great if you want to add texture and dimension to your outdoor space whilst minimising the amount of grass that you’d need to maintain, then recycled aggregates or crushed concrete are ideal.

Recycled aggregates and crushed concrete are not only faster and cheaper to obtain than freshly quarried aggregates, but by using them for your gravel you’ll be doing your part to stop perfectly good and usable materials from going to landfill.

Borders

One simple way to neaten up your garden and give it that extra touch of elegance is by creating stone borders along your flower bed edges. This makes everything look nice and tidy and helps to separate the spaces of your garden in a way that is both subtle and still cohesive.

If you’re looking to create a uniform border, then one option would be to use reclaimed bricks; alternatively, for a more rustic appearance, larger pieces of recycled concrete would also be effective.

Patio

Sustainable and recycled concrete has yet another use in landscaping design - patios. Using mismatched pieces of concrete slabs creates an incredibly effective patio that adds character to your garden, whilst offering a flat, even space that can be used to house outdoor furniture, create an outdoor dining area or even as a base to create a pond area surrounded by potted plants.
