The Different Types of Waste Management

William Thompson & Son • 21 April 2022

Every business has a different approach when it comes to waste management. But what exactly is waste management? This term refers to the ways in which we manage and dispose of waste, with the primary objective to minimise the number of unusable materials to protect the environment. In fact, there are a number of different ways that you can approach waste management.

Here are the different types of waste management that businesses have adopted over the years.

Recycling

This type of waste management is effective because it allows for new products to be made out of ones that have already existed. Rather than disposing of waste and burning them into greenhouse gases, recycling waste reduces the amount of harmful properties that are produced. This type of waste management is favoured by a lot of businesses because of how much it protects and benefits the environment. Using a recycling service means that you’ll be conserving natural resources whilst reducing the demand for raw materials.

Landfill

A landfill is a type of waste management system that buries waste material underground. Modern landfills are well-engineered and monitored to ensure that everything complies with regulations. In addition to this, they are also designed to protect the environment from contaminants that could be present in the waste stream. If something cannot be recycled, then it’s likely that it’ll end up at landfills instead. Modern landfills are also efficient and reliable, meaning that it is a cost-effective way to dispose of waste compared to others. Although landfills might not be the most eco-friendly solution, it is a much better alternative than burning waste instead, which can only produce more greenhouse gases.

Incineration

Perhaps known as the least eco-friendly method of disposing of waste, this technique requires solid waste to be burned at high temperatures, which is then converted into residue and gas. Although there is the benefit that there is less physical waste, the amount of greenhouse gases that this produces is massively detrimental to the environment. These greenhouse gases trap heat, contributing significantly to global warming.
