The Many Benefits of Rock Walls

William Thompson & Son • 19 July 2022

Stone walls were once the normal way to build any type of fencing and even many houses. This was taken over by concrete and wood later on, but rock walls still have some unique benefits to consider. If you’re building a retaining wall, a privacy wall, or just thinking about setting up a shed, you should consider a rock wall.

The benefits are many, including:

Prevent Erosion

Rock walls make excellent retaining walls. Not only are they sturdy and broad, they are also ideal for preventing erosion. Even if you simply place the rocks on a hillside, they will stop some of the erosion, though they are also likely to slide or roll down. However, when you build a wall, it will completely prevent the soil from washing away and is commonly used to keep hillsides and embankments from eroding.

When combined with other things such as ground cover, you can prevent all hillside erosion.

Protect Against Elements

Rocks have stood for centuries against the wind, rain, and snow. This bodes well when using them in walls. This protection extends to your own property and everything you have inside. Even if it’s just a shed, you can expect the interior to stay safe and secure. It’s also a good protection against heat and cold.

Create Long Lasting Walls

Walls that are built from rock are very long lasting. Ancient civilisations used stone for their building and many of these buildings still stand, even though the thatch and wood parts have long since rotted away. Rock walls also won’t deteriorate, so they’re something you can use generations from now, even if the place stands empty all that time.

Add Aesthetically Pleasing Structures

Rock walls are beautiful. There are many different ways to build them, from the rambling stone farm walls made with various sizes of stone to the modern options. You’ll find that simple stone blocks look more contemporary than the rounded river stones or blocky random sized pieces, but there’s a look for everyone who loves rock in their buildings.

If you enjoy rock walls, why not incorporate them into your buildings and property fences? They’re relatively easy to build and the style for your design is available. Many people enjoy learning to build small retaining walls, but you can always hire a stonemason if you prefer.
