What You Need to Know About Ready Mix Concrete

William Thompson & Son • 13 October 2020

Ready-mix concrete is prepared according to a set mix design in a plant rather than a specific job site. Manufacturers will mix sand, gravel, cement, and water, then deliver the mixture to the site - this is dependent on the project itself. Ready-mix concrete is delivered in two formats, these are transit-mix concrete and shrink-mix concrete. With transit-mix concrete, the mixing process will take place inside the truck transporting the concrete.

The concrete is partially mixed while it is still in transit, and the full mixing takes place once it reaches the destination. Mixing concrete in this manner prevents it from hardening during the transit. On the other hand, shrink-mix is mixed (a little bit) at the plant before being transported. Like transit-mix concrete, shrink-mix concrete is fully mixed once it reaches the work location. But it's worth noting that this type of mixing allows more concrete to be transported at one time.

What Are the Benefits of Ready-Mix Concrete?

Ready-mix concrete is often a more popular choice rather than other building materials. However, there are three overarching benefits which we will mention below:

Cost-effective

Ready-mixed concrete is durable in terms of damage and from any source, including high winds, fire, or perhaps even explosions. As well as this, it cannot be harmed by insects and other small creatures, so this eliminates the need for special treatments or sealants. Concrete can also withstand a lot of moisture, this is because it does not decay or warp like other building materials. So taking this into consideration, concrete can withstand extremely high temperatures, making it durable to very intense climate conditions.

Versatility

Ready-mix concrete is highly flexible and can be moulded into pretty much any shape. Whether you want to make a pillar, sculpture, or even use it for a driveway, ready-mix concrete is the ideal material for your project. Many people use chemical admixtures to change the colour, porosity, and curing time of the concrete, further expanding their options for customising their projects.

Affordable

When compared to various other materials that are used for construction such as brick, ready-mix concrete is far less costly. It is easy to apply and gives a uniform appearance when applied to lots of different surfaces. Brick, on the other hand, is hard to even out and takes a lot of time, money, as well as resources to transport.
