Landscaping Inspiration: Domestic Uses of Gabion Stones

WM Thompson & Sons Ltd • 13 August 2024

Often used commercially, such as in construction projects or for erosion control, gabion stones are a unique construction material that combines natural rocks and stones with wire cages.

However, their use doesn’t have to be limited exclusively for construction and commercial requirements. In fact, there are various ways they can be used in a domestic setting - for both aesthetic and practical purposes.

Read on as we discuss this in more detail.

What are Gabion Stones?

Gabion stones refers to large, angular natural stones that are kept in wire cages. These cages allow what’s known as gabion walls to be created, giving the appearance of neat structures that still have a rustic effect thanks to the natural appearance of the stones.

As for their practical use, the gaps in the stones make for ideal drainage, hence why they’re commonly used as structures in flood defence solutions.

DIY Uses for Gabion Stones

Rock Gardens

One of the easiest ways you could use gabion stones in your home is by creating a rock garden. Rock gardens make for unique yet attractive features in the garden that can home an array of rockery plants.

They also make great spaces for wildlife, as the shaded crevices they offer are great for use by all kinds of bugs, insects and even small mammals such as mice or voles.

Using a gabion is great for those who have limited garden space but still want to benefit from a rock garden, as they can come in various sizes. This makes it more than easy to place a small gabion cage in your garden and plant some alpine plants between the gaps in the rocks, then surround the edges with smaller rocks or stones to camouflage the exposed wire of the gabion cage.

Garden Walls

Gabion stones also make excellent garden walls, whether that be decorative walls or retaining walls.

As retaining walls, they have many desirable qualities; for example, they have the strength and stature to hold any sloping earth behind the wall, whilst their excellent drainage properties means there’s less risk of flooding or corrosion caused by soil and water runoff.

Aesthetic Decoration

Lastly, you can simply use gabion stones as decoration! If you’re a fan of that natural, rustic look, with a touch of industrial, then gabion cages are perfect to have in your garden.

You could use them as borders for your flower beds, turn them into water features or simply have them as stand alone statuesque decorations! There are many opportunities to get creative with their usage.
